WHAT TO DO WITH KIDS ON THE OREGON COAST

When planning an Oregon Coast family vacation, you can’t go wrong in Pacific City. See some of our favorite activities that are fun for the whole family below.

Newport Aquarium

Just an hour south of Pacific City and a world away, The Oregon Coast Aquarium in Newport is definitely worth a visit! Exhibits feature seals, sea lions, sea otters, jellies and more—all guaranteed to educate, entertain and enlighten you and your children. Check out the Newport Aquarium during your stay at our Oregon Coast vacation rentals.

Kamp Kiwanda For kids 12 & under

Sign up your kids to be a part of Kamp Kiwanda. This is a favorite among family friendly activities on the Oregon coast. They will receive a t-shirt, a bucket of fun treats, a birthday card on their special day, a fun trinket from Captain Kiawanda's treasure chest, coupons for fun and yummy surprise, and a bunch of FUN activities to do at the beach!

Sign up at the Inn at Cape Kiwanda or call 888-965-7001 and ask for Susanne.

Kite Flying

Feel like a kid yourself with your young ones when you head out to the beach to fly kites! Our mildly windy shores can be a great place for your family fun to reach new heights. Down in Lincoln City, OR, there’s the Northwest Winds Kites & Toys Store, that also sells its kites online, or plan a special half-day trip to Lincoln City for its two Kite Festivals.

Whale Watching

Whale watching is a popular activity with no age restrictions or limits. Buy a couple pairs of binoculars and head out onto the beach or take a hike for a better vantage point of the migrating whales. More than 20,000 gray whales make their way along the Pacific Northwest Coast before moving further south for the winter. Be sure to have that camera ready as they don’t breach for very long! While waiting for them to make their presence known, you and your kids might catch sight of seals, sea lions, or our beach bunnies.

Horseback riding

Take an extra special trip to the beach on horseback! Riders must be at least 8 years old, or children under 8 can enjoy the pony rides through Green Acres Beach & Trail Rides. The one-hour beach ride is perfect for families looking for an adventure along the beach but without the kids losing interest. There is a two-hour park tour available as well but is for the more advanced rider.

Rides are seven days a week during the summer season and begin as early as 10 a.m. and the last ride of the day is at 4 p.m.

Beachcombing

A major draw of our Oregon Coast location is access to the beach and a fun family-friendly activity is beachcombing or searching the sand for treasures. These treasures can be wonderful keepsakes of your time in Oregon or you can leave them be for the next beachcomber to find. Common beach treasures include seashells, sand dollars, small fossils, agates, driftwood, and more. In fact, you could even run into man-made items such as boat parts, ropes, corks, and coins! Let your kids run along the water’s edge searching for new treasures or take it to the next level and create your own Pacific City, Oregon treasure map that you can keep for years to come.

Biking

Whether you want to bike on Pacific City’s bike path or take your two-wheel adventure to the beach, there are bicycling options that are suitable for all ages of your family members.

Hiking

If your little ones have energy that needs to be expended, take them hiking! With a few nearby trails offering excellent views of the coast and wildflowers, your young ones will love walking ad running along our trails.

If the kids still want to get outdoors but aren’t ready for a hiking trail, we have a wonderful variety of local parks and recreation areas that children and adults both love to explore. We recommend Munson Creek Falls for the spectacular waterfall and picnic options, or the Tillamook State Forest for its impressive panoramic views.

Fishing

Fishing can be a great way to spend a relaxing afternoon in Oregon and teach your child a fun skill. Be sure to check out these fishing with your family tips from Take Me Fishing to make sure your little anglers have fun on the water.
