You recycle everything you can at home. You drive a hybrid or efficient car. You turn down the heat and AC when you’re not in the house. You’re doing your best to cut the earth a break and lighten your carbon footprint. So why should your vacation have to be any different?

Unfortunately, your few days of R&R can be pretty tough on the environment. While your vacation may be the perfect time to appreciate the splendor and diversity of the planet, packaging from snacks, emissions from travel, and the convenience of CO2-laden transport can all rack up a serious toll on the earth. But that doesn’t mean you don’t deserve to have a nice, relaxing time off. Our motto here at Modernize is that green doesn’t mean inconvenient. Rather, it’s a lifestyle that starts with small changes you can make anywhere, at anytime. Here are our recommendations on how to have a vacation that’s relaxing and eco-friendly, by integrating one or more of these earth-approved vacation tips into your summer Oregon Coast holiday!

Prepare Your Snacks Ahead of Time

Ever notice how you seem to rack up a lot of trash on a road trip? All of those snacks, drinks, and water bottles come in disposable packaging that’s difficult to recycle when you’re on the road. Most of the time, all that excess plastic, glass, and paper goes straight into the garbage bin the next time you stop to fill up. To reduce your trip’s landfill footprint, try portioning your snacks out ahead of time in reusable containers. Also, carry a refillable water bottle with you instead of using plastic bottles—most rest stops have a water fountain where you can fill up on the go. At the end of your trip, gather all of your recyclables and drop them off at the facilities located at the Inn at Cape Kiwanda upon check-in.

Minimize Your Carbon Footprint as You Travel

Which is better for the environment, flying or driving? Experts remain divided. That’s because it really varies depending on the vehicle you use, the length of your trip, and how many people you take with you, so the math can get pretty complicated. However, one thing they do agree on is that no matter which way you decide to travel, you should try to make your trip as low-emissions as possible. If you’re flying, that means choosing direct flights rather than layovers, since planes tend to consume more fuel when they’re taking off and landing. And if you decide to go by car, consider renting a hybrid automobile to make the trek. Your fuel savings may just offset some of the cost you incur by renting! Give the Cottages at Cape Kiwanda Concierge staff a call at 503-965-7920 to help you locate the best eco-friendly rentals and return centers.

Rely on Green Transportation

Getting around on a bicycle or on foot is a great way to explore our cozy little beach town and take in the sights—and get a little fresh air and exercise in the process! Every Oregon Coast vacation rental home has at least 2 bikes provided, most have at least 4. The Cottages at Cape Kiwanda, Hart’s Camp, and Inn at Cape Kiwanda all provide complimentary beach cruiser bikes to our guests. Just stop in and let us know how many you need! The slower pace helps you really appreciate the scenery like never before. And all the exercise lowers your stress levels, which is exactly why you went on vacation in the first place!

Book a Green Hotel Room

Find out if your hotel makes green efforts by asking them directly. Ask about recycling programs, food donation services, energy efficient lighting, heating and cooling, and washers and dryers. One of the most effective ways you can help the environment is by pouring your dollars exclusively into hotels that operate this way, since it can encourage other businesses to take note. Using your vacation for a little impromptu eco-activism? Sounds like a good deal to me!

Distinctive Oregon Coast luxury retreat caters to adventure-seekers and the active Pacific NW lifestyle, will welcome guests mid-summer 2017

Pacific City, Oregon (November 3, 2016)—Come summer 2017 those seeking a distinctly Pacific Northwest lodging experience have a new destination to frequent: introducing Kiwanda Lodge & Spa at Pacific City. The Kiwanda Lodge concept responds to a gap in the market for a luxury oceanfront experience that presents outdoor recreational opportunities for the next generation traveler.

The resort—planned to showcase the uncommon sporty culture of the carefree, casually-elegant, and authentic Pacific City lifestyle—is the inspiration of Jeff Schons and Mary Jones at the helm of the Nestucca Ridge Family of Companies. The company also owns and operates the Inn at Cape Kiwanda, Cottages at Cape Kiwanda, Shorepine Vacation Rentals and the award-winning Pelican Brewing Company.

Off the beaten path on a relatively undiscovered stretch of the majestic Oregon Coast, Kiwanda Lodge & Spa features 33 luxury oceanfront suites, a premier fitness spa, and unique  restaurant featuring contemporary Northwest cuisine, wine, beer and spirits.

Filling a gap in Oregon recreational destination resorts

“For all the character found in so many Oregon coast towns, there is no luxury hotel that embraces the unique Oregon outdoor culture and encourages guests to immerse themselves in all the natural surroundings and recreational experiences we have to offer,” says Mary Jones, owner/partner. “We’ll offer an unexpected, undiscovered retreat created with active travelers and families in mind.”

The new property joins a unique combination of beachfront  cottages, vacation rentals, an inn and the award-winning Pelican Brewing Company—the only oceanfront brewpub on the Oregon Coast.  The Nestucca Ridge Family of Companies is an organically-grown collection of coastal businesses dedicated to memory-making beach vacations, meetings and ownership experiences.

“The Kiwanda Lodge & Spa fills a void in our hospitality options here on the Tillamook Coast,” says Nan Devlin, director for Visit Tillamook Coast, the county’s tourism marketing organization. “We frequently get requests from visitors and tour groups wanting an oceanfront experience where they can enjoy the beach, restaurant, spa facilities and recreation in one location. This property is what we’ve been waiting for.”

Cape Kiwanda, in Pacific City, enjoys a storied connection to the ocean, local rivers, beachfront and majestic outdoor playground. The new getaway is poised to offer visitors boundless invigorating recreation including hiking, biking, surfing, fishing, kayaking, beachcombing and more. And for those seeking luxury spa treatments, a fitness regimen, or scintillating work-out, it’s all there.
